Atari Breakout

Atari breakout is a very easy game to play. It was designed by a non-microprocessor game which was designed by Nolan Bushnell, Steve Wozniak, and Steve Bristow.

The original version was very short and simple. All of the versions from time to time had the same rule. The game began with eight rows of blocks; each two rows had different colors. The order of the colors from bottom up was yellow, green, orange and red. It had only two screens of blocks. The latest version has more fun with lots of differences with different difficulties.

In the original version, yellow blocks earn one point for each, green blocks earn three points, orange blocks earn five points and the top-level red blocks score seven points for each, while in the latest version, all of the blocks earn 100 points, moreover, if the ball hits the falling blocks, you will earn more points. Therefore, when playing the original version, the achievable highest score that players could reach was 896 points done by eliminating scores from two screens of blocks worth 448 points. On the other hand, the score that players can reach is unlimited, because the more falling blocks make players hit, the higher the score obtains.

However, the original version had more interesting options than the latest version we are playing. With the original version, players could play in two-player mode. Playing in this mode, players could get higher score. Furthermore, it seems to be the most exciting is that players could compete with their friends.

Gradually, the original version was developed and it became Super breakout. In Super Breakout, there are three different and more advanced game types from which the player can choose:

  • Double gives the player control of two bats at the same time – one placed above the other – and two balls. Losing a life occurs only when both balls go out of play, and points are doubled while the player is able to juggle both balls without losing either.
  • Cavity retains the single bat and ball of Breakout, but two other balls are enclosed on the other side of the wall, which the player must be free before them, too, they can be used to destroy additional bricks. Points are increased for this, but triple points are available if the player can keep all three balls in play.
  • Progressive also has the single bat and ball, but as the ball hits the paddle, the entire wall gradually advances downwards step by step, gaining in speed the longer the ball lasts in play.
